Notes on a scandal (2006)
Bill Nighy – Richard Hart – Notes on a Scandal
The film is based on the book by Zoe Heller.
Storyline from the book:
From the first day that the beguiling Sheba Hart joins the staff of St George’s, history teacher Barbara Covett is convinced that she has found a kindred spirit. Barbara’s loyalty to her new friend is passionate and unstinting and when Sheba is discovered to be having an affair with one of her young pupils, Barbara quickly elects herself as Sheba’s chief defender. But all is not as it first seems in this dark story and, as Sheba will soon discover, a friend can be just as trecherous as any lover.
Cate Blanchett is playing Sheba, Judi Dench is playing Barbara and Bill Nighy is playing Sheba’s “doting older husband” Richard.
The film is scheduled for a premiere in the US in december 2006, and the UK in February 2007.
Bill Nighy has also been nominated for a London Critics Film Award, for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Notes on a Scandal.
Although “Notes” relies on its female leads, Nighy also deserves a slap on the back for his portrayal of Sheba’s husband. Richard realizes he’s too old for a woman like Sheba, but he makes up for his age with a heavy dose of wit and even more charisma. But Richard’s shell of charm is not impenetrable. The movie features an unforgettable scene where the usually pleasant Richard lets loose as he sees Barbara march forward to crush yet another family outing.
Bill Nighy contributes his usual magnetic presence in pitch-perfect supporting role as Sheba’s husband. “I’m not saying I was so (expletive) fabulous,” he shouts at his wayward wife. “But I was here.”
Variety.com : “a terrifically boisterous Bill Nighy”
