Bill Nighy nominated for Distinguished Performance of the year
Bill Nighy adds another nomination to his already long list. He has been nominated for a Distinguished Performance of the year, the oldest theatrical honors in America, for his role as Oliver Lucas in The Vertical Hour.
The Drama League Awards are the oldest theatrical honors in America, beginning in 1935 and predating the Tony Awards by twelve years. These highly-prized awards are also the only major awards given by theatregoers themselves — they are chosen each year by the thousands of Drama League members nationwide.
Other league nominees for 2007 Distinguished Performance of the year—which can be won by an actor only once—include Vanessa Redgrave, Hugh Dancy, Ethan Hawke, Ed Harris and Meryl Streep.
Read more about the awards on the Drama League website.
The awards will be presented the 11th of May, 2007.

Come closer, my child.
Bill will read Dracula!

Ah, may he win. Ethan Hawke was good as the anarchist Bakunin in Stoppard’s trilogy, but his character only had one note (”First, destroy everything! Second, there is no second.”). Bill, on the other hand, had a range of nuances to his performance. I saw him do it three times and each time I was more impressed.
Bill Nighy is the Zeus of the Stage. Please, gods of the drama awards, give him the g-d Tony Award!
May he win indeed, it would be nothing more than absolutely deserved.
Hmm. I just looked at the presenters for the Drama League do: THREE of them (Ethan Hawke, Billy Crudup, and Brian O’Byrne) are from Stoppard’s “Coast of Utopia.” Nicht gut.
If the fix is in, if it’s politics not justice, I’ll be a sad puppy tomorrow!
