Happy Birthday Bill, and yes a tony award would be the appropriate gift for a most elegant talented actor.
And having seen “The Vertical Hour” several times, I’m pretty sure dear Bill will be nominated as Best Actor. He is Energy Incarnate on that stage — an absolutely fascinating presence, commanding the boards, eliciting laughs with a mere flicker of his eyebrows or nervous shrug, riveting every viewer even when he doesn’t say a word.
It helps, though, that he also has all the best lines and delivers them exquisitely. Bill Nighy is what you remember about that play. If his kinetic energy could be bottled, everyone would buy it.
