I saw a preview today. Bill Nighy was excellent & well worth seeing. Julieanne Moore is another story. She is very pretty & tries hard, but it’s obvious she’s never been on the stage before. Basically, she recites her lines. That’s not to say she didn’t have a few good moments, but only a few. If they replace her, then the play would be even more worth seeing.

The rest of the cast is also excellent.

Ingrid, I’ve been too busy to check, but is the play now available to buy? Somewhere I read that it is indeed going to be a love triangle — the Julianne Moore character will be torn between her boyfriend and *his father,* who is obviously going to be played by our dashing Bill.

Women are going to be galloping to this play!

But I’m intending to go to a preview, so will likely see it in Nov. first, then prob. again in Dec. to see what has changed (playwrights often do change material after they’ve seen some audience reaction). I’m *very* interested in Hare and have been rereading his plays, thinking about how he mixes politics and personal relationships, and I’m developing a theory about that too….

Part of my theory — well, okay, my prediction — is that this play, with Bill, will be a very popular one with women ’cause I think it’s going to be more like “Skylight” — focused on how politics plays out in relationships. It’s because his last play, “Stuff Happens,” was an overtly political play about the Iraq War, so this one will be the muted, bring-in-the people-who-hate-diatribes version. But I’m sure it will be about Mideast mess, because he really has been focused on that since “Via Dolorosa” — at least in his own work.

Heard he’s going to do the screenplay of J. Franzen’s “Corrections,” though. Anyone read that? Wonderfully quirky novel about a dysfunctional family.

I could indeed be fun to meet up, but I think it is practically impossible to organize ! :-)

What surprises me is that they’re having Monday performances…That’s usually the day of the week that theatres are dark. Well, now that I think of it, that might be a very clever idea: If there’s nothing else someone who wants to see a play on a Monday can see, they’ll see this. Way to get the uncommitted to do some thinking, or to make people who otherwise would not want to see a political play, inadvertently watch it.

I don’t doubt for a second, btw, that this play is going to be about the Iraq War and America’s hubris and stupidity at getting into it; ditto, Britain’s foolhardiness in signing on as allies. After “Via Dolorosa,” I’m sure this is what David Hare really wants to talk about.

My big hope is that it’s a realistic play about relationships, like “Skylight,” and not a Brechtian play with weird post-modern elements (play interrupted by commentators, or audience reminded, “this is all acting, it’s not real, wake up!”). Yeah, yeah, we know he can do that arty stuff, so I hope he won’t in this one….
