Bill Nighy and The Vertical Hour – a kind of Englishman

Bill Nighy on his way to his Broadway debutFinally some more information about The Vertical Hour, starring Bill Nighy and Julianne Moore, and Andrew Scott. This play, written by David Hare, and directed by Sam Mendes will be performed on Broadway in New York from the end of November.

The Vertical Hour centers on Nadia Blye, a young American war correspondent turned academic who now teaches Political Studies at Yale. A brief holiday with her boyfriend in the Welsh borders brings her into contact with a kind of Englishman whose culture and beliefs are a surprise and a challenge, both to her and to her relationship.
The Vertical Hour marks the first time in playwright David Hare’s (Stuff Happens) career that one of his plays will have a world premiere in the U.S.

Some Americans
like to think that Bill is best known for playing Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean film, but we know better than that. Bill has a long and very successful theatre career in the UK behind him, and will now make his debut on Broadway, New York. They may lent him, but remember that we saw him first, and we surely want him back in London after this. On stage too, if possible.

The official premiere will be on the 30st of November, and the closing date is set to the 28th of March 2007.

Performance times:
Monday-Saturday – 8PM
Wednesday & Saturday – 2PM

From the 4th of December:
Tuesday-Saturday – 8PM
Wednesday & Saturday – 2PM
Sunday – 3PM

Ticket sales will start soon.

Love the new press photo of Bill. He’s not goofing, just looking friendly and handsome.

I wonder how many pictures they had to take before they had a non-goofing one. He is looking very happy too, which is a good thing. And very charming and handsome indeed.

Can’t wait for tickets to go on sale! Will Bill be in the play for the whole run or only selected dates? Would hate to get tickets for a non-Bill performance! Love the updates on the site, btw!

I was wondering the same thing about the performances. Surely Bill would be committed to the whole run in his contract, but who knows. :\

I will give the theatre a call when they start selling tickets. I also would like to be very sure that Bill is in the performance I am going to fly over from London for ! Of course one can be very unlucky and he can get ill on that particular day, but hey. I expect Bill to be committed for the whole run too.

@Erin – thank you – it was about time to give the site a new suit. :-)

Hehe I love the Davy quote. :D

That’s a good idea to call and make sure that he will be in the performance you want to book for. Will note that.

Do you know what days you can go Ingrid?

@Holly – whenever there are tickets I would say.
I will probably see the play twice, and am currently considering visiting NY around Christmas, but I let it all depend on ticket and Bill availaBILLity.

Yeah, Davy wanted to be represented with quotes too, so who am I to say no to him. I added a lot of new quotes today, not only Davy, but also Philip, Cameron, Dylan and Viktor are now in there. They popup randomly. :-)

Awesome Ingrid! I will be in NYC Dec. 6-10 and am really hoping Bill will be doing performances then. Would love the chance to meet him too, but I won’t get my hopes up on that yet. Tickets are more important right now. *crosses fingers*

The quote with Ray and credit cards is up now, and these are so much funnier with the pictures. Great idea to add the pictures!

I’m sure he’ll be in it for the whole run — he’s very conscientious with his work and people are paying to see him and Julianne Moore.

What surprises me is that they’re having Monday performances…That’s usually the day of the week that theatres are dark. Well, now that I think of it, that might be a very clever idea: If there’s nothing else someone who wants to see a play on a Monday can see, they’ll see this. Way to get the uncommitted to do some thinking, or to make people who otherwise would not want to see a political play, inadvertently watch it.

I don’t doubt for a second, btw, that this play is going to be about the Iraq War and America’s hubris and stupidity at getting into it; ditto, Britain’s foolhardiness in signing on as allies. After “Via Dolorosa,” I’m sure this is what David Hare really wants to talk about.

My big hope is that it’s a realistic play about relationships, like “Skylight,” and not a Brechtian play with weird post-modern elements (play interrupted by commentators, or audience reminded, “this is all acting, it’s not real, wake up!”). Yeah, yeah, we know he can do that arty stuff, so I hope he won’t in this one….

I noticed that the play ends on my birthday. I may need to go to that performance! Although I have two weeks of freedom during Christmas while my sons are visiting their Granny. Too bad we all couldn’t meet up there somehow and have a big Bill-fest! But everyday is a Bill-fest, isn’t it?

@Susan : after the 4th of December there will be no more Monday performances, then they will move over to a Sunday afternoon one in stead.

I could indeed be fun to meet up, but I think it is practically impossible to organize ! :-)

It could be loosely done, probably — we could all aim for tix on a certain day or couple of days. If nothing else, it would be possible to meet up for lunch or dinner in a time frame when all of us will have seen the play, even if we weren’t at the same performances.

But I’m intending to go to a preview, so will likely see it in Nov. first, then prob. again in Dec. to see what has changed (playwrights often do change material after they’ve seen some audience reaction). I’m *very* interested in Hare and have been rereading his plays, thinking about how he mixes politics and personal relationships, and I’m developing a theory about that too….

Part of my theory — well, okay, my prediction — is that this play, with Bill, will be a very popular one with women ’cause I think it’s going to be more like “Skylight” — focused on how politics plays out in relationships. It’s because his last play, “Stuff Happens,” was an overtly political play about the Iraq War, so this one will be the muted, bring-in-the people-who-hate-diatribes version. But I’m sure it will be about Mideast mess, because he really has been focused on that since “Via Dolorosa” — at least in his own work.

Heard he’s going to do the screenplay of J. Franzen’s “Corrections,” though. Anyone read that? Wonderfully quirky novel about a dysfunctional family.

sorry to be so talky today — three cups of a.m. coffee will do it!

I’m very excited about Bill performing on stage in New York, and I’m also planning to make a trip over to see this play.

And Ingrid, I have to say I really love how this website is evolving. You’re doing a beautiful work.

Went online to buy tickets today. Love Bill Nighy … but $250 a ticket (sold only in pairs) with a $50 service charge?

On http://www.telecharge.com you can buy single tickets for about $92, and a few dollars service charge. I bought my tickets there, without any problems.

Sue, you are looking at premium tickets. I saw those too, but you can get perfectly good seats for about $100 each (what it comesout to with the service charge). I got a pair in row 11 for that price. Also, it helps if you go on a weekday rather than a weekend when seat availability drops dramatically.

Ingrid, I’ve been too busy to check, but is the play now available to buy? Somewhere I read that it is indeed going to be a love triangle — the Julianne Moore character will be torn between her boyfriend and *his father,* who is obviously going to be played by our dashing Bill.

Women are going to be galloping to this play!

If you mean the script of the play, it’s still on pre-order on Amazon. I’ll keep an eye on it.

I will soon add a subscribtion service, so you get a mail when there is Nighy news. Might be handy for these more quiet periods.

Yes I know about the triangle, very intersting!

You all don’t know me, but I’m hoping the producers of The Vertical Hour will see this.

I saw a preview today. Bill Nighy was excellent & well worth seeing. Julieanne Moore is another story. She is very pretty & tries hard, but it’s obvious she’s never been on the stage before. Basically, she recites her lines. That’s not to say she didn’t have a few good moments, but only a few. If they replace her, then the play would be even more worth seeing.

The rest of the cast is also excellent.
