Nighy : Getting in touch with his inner octopus

To achieve this ghastly image, which was created with the help of computer graphics, Nighy had to perform wearing cumbersome grey overalls with light-emitting diodes, so the machine could trace his movements for later adornment. It was nothing like the cool pirate clothes that stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom wear, and it was also a far cry from the natty blue suit and open-necked shirt Nighy had on for an interview in a tony Beverly Hills hotel.

“I looked like a sad old reject from (rock band) Devo,” he said. “I looked like Devo’s dad.”

“I think, traditionally, villains are supposed to have more fun,” he said. “It is an opportunity to do all the things you never do in real life, and to use those facial arrangements that you would never normally use. The scary stuff. So you do tend to relish it, and you try to take it to the nth degree. Mind you, I have an (octopus) growing out of my chin, so I’m halfway there!”

“Davy Jones is a tragic figure, but I don’t know if I even intended it, originally. You start off just trying to be scary. That’s a large part of your job. But somehow the material encouraged me to lean towards the lost and tragic side of things. Which makes it more interesting, hopefully.”

From scary to funny…. it’s great to see a sense of humor in the “BIG” world… Not much of a sense of humor in Los Angeles…. thanks, Bill.
