Interview with Bill Nighy – returning to stage – in New York
Darkhorizons.com has another excellent interview with Bill Nighy about his role in the Pirates of the Carribean – Dead Man’s Chest. He talks about the ships, and a lot of other interesting things in a very Nighy way.
“Question: Did you discover the inner pirate in you when you embarked on it?
Nighy: There is a touch of pirate in me after all apparently. Yeah. Particularly when they showed me my ship. When I first saw the ship … and Gore said, “Have you seen the ship, have you seen the ship?” “No”, I said, “I haven’t seen it”. I stood on the ship and thought how the hell did they let me get away with this? Well you have seen the ship, it is just an insane prop; it is like the biggest, most beautiful thing. It was humbling … and you get on those things, all of those ships, and the level of design and the level of inventiveness with all of it, is kind of daunting at first. It is encouraging obviously, but you also think, “Well, I’d better be good”. ”
One of the most interesting facts in this interview is Bill Nighy telling the interviewer that he is going to do a play in New York at the end of the year. The play is “The Vertical Hour”, it is written by David Hare, and has Julianne Moore in it, and it is directed by Sam (American Beauty) Mendes. Now that is good news.

I'm not saying I was so fucking fabulous, but I was here.
Bill will read Dracula!

And the play opens at the Music Box Theatre in NYC on Nov. 30. Probably there will be previews for a couple of weeks before that. And I *know* I’ll be there. This is the first time David Hare is premiering a play in America. (If I had to guess why, I’d say — Iraq War. He’d like to stop aggressive politics at the source and the source is, sadly, in my own country, the U.S. of A.)
There was also something about some indifferences with theatres in London, which is why it’s moved to NY. I wonder if they are going to do the play in London too.
I *know* I am going to be in NY for sure too by the way, looking forward to it very much.
Ticket sales hasn’t started yet as far as I can see, but I will try to update this site as soon as I find out more.
That’d be much appreciated guys. Julianne Moore huh? I like the cast.
I enjoy Bill Nighy as an actor, but the prices for the new place are outrageous. I saw Ralph Fiennes (and Cherry Jones, etc) this summer in The Faith Healer — cost was $85 for 10th row seats. Here cheapest appear to be $185. Nobody is worth that.
Well Bill is worth it.
But I paid $95 for my tickets.
My attendance is a holiday gift to my Mother who adores Mr. Nighy. My mother, who I found watching “Love Actually” again last night! Its a sad case. I will be interested in seeing each of your reviews. I enjoy live theatre so much that good or bad, I am going to enjoy it.
